Free Passes for Class-Related Travel

Going somewhere? We can help.

Professors who require their students to travel to destinations other than class (photography lab, museum, botanical garden research, rehearsals, etc.) must submit our free pass request form completely and accurately. The earlier your request is made, the better we can help to make the trip a success! Read on for qualifications and important info.

  • In order to be guaranteed, all trip and pass requests must be submitted two weeks in advance.
  • If an entire class is traveling simultaneously, professors will be asked to charter a van for the trip. See the point below.
  • Requests for free passes may be rejected depending on class size and time of travel. This is done out of fairness to our other riders.
  • A complete roster of pass recipients must be attached to the request. This roster must include names, dates of travel, and Fordham email addresses.
  • All trips must be conducted with the approval of the relevant department head.

Access the pass request form here. Any additional questions should be sent to

Free Passes to Class

Receiving passes for class travel is simple. Just check your account.

Through the miracle of modern technology, all eligible students will automatically receive free Ram Van passes throughout the academic term. This automated process uses your current course schedule to assign passes on a weekly basis.  Carefully consider the below information prior to registration.

Passes will be automatically issued to qualified students on Wednesday mornings. The first issuance for Fall 2019 will be 8/21/19 and will be for the following week (in this case, for 8/21 to 8/27). This cycle will repeat on a weekly basis.

  • If you are a resident in Fordham housing and are currently enrolled in a class at an alternate campus, then you are eligible to receive free passes.
  • If you are a commuter student and are currently enrolled in classes at more than one campus simultaneously, then you are eligible to receive free passes.
    • Note: If you do not live in Fordham housing you are considered a commuter student, regardless of the proximity of your residence to any campus.
  • Passes are assigned using the student’s home campus as the departure point.
    • For resident students, the home campus is determined by the location of their residence
    • For commuter students, home campus is determined entirely by their school of enrollment.

Using Your Digital Pass

Using your pass is simple. Please see this brief video for a demonstration:

If you have examined the qualifications above and feel you are eligible for free travel and have verified that passes have not been added to your account, please submit the Pass Request Form at this link. Disputes will take 2-4 days to process, during which students are responsible for their own travel. If an error is found, the student will be reimbursed for any Ram Van expenses following the submission of the form. Receipts must be provided for reimbursement.

 Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Can my guests or friends use my passes?

A: You may elect to use your passes for guest travel, but please keep in mind that you are only granted exactly enough passes to travel to and from class.

Q: I think I should be getting any passes / more passes. What is going on?

A: Remember that passes will not be issued until the Wednesday prior to the start of the term and are automatically issued on a weekly basis for all students whose class schedule meets our eligibility requirements.  Click on the relevant category for your travel above to review qualifications and find out how to best submit a dispute. Be warned: the automated pass system is highly accurate. Students are responsible for their own travel while their dispute is being reviewed.

Q: I have a class that is listed as “TBD”, but I believe should be eligible for passes. What do I do?

A: Classes with “TBD” in either the day or location will not be eligible for digital passes. The only way to receive passes in this case is to have your professor email with the date and location of the class, as well as confirmation that you are enrolled in the class.

Q: No dice! My situation doesn’t fit anything you described above. What do I do if I think I am eligible for free passes?

A: Any other special requests for passes that are not confirmed by your academic schedule must be emailed to by your professor

Q: My passes were lost / stolen recently? What do I do?

A: Ram Van and the Department of University Transportation are not liable for lost or stolen passes.
